Our Church History

During the early part of 1958, Victory Baptist Church began looking into the possibility of beginning a Bible believing Baptist Church in the suburban area of northeast Indianapolis. The new work had begun under the capable leadership of Rev. Ernest Wilson. The congregation had its first service in the schoolhouse at 30th and Shadeland. Toward the end of 1958 the congregation had begun the construction of the parsonage which served as the church building until 1962. At this time it had become evident that the church had outgrown its facilities, so preperations were made to begin construction on a new building the summer of 1962. The building had been completed in August and the first service was held in the new building on the last Sunday of August in 1962.

Since its beginning, Shadeland has been a “Great Commission Church”, accepting its primary goal to win and develop people for Jesus.

A Friendly Church with the Gospel Message

Why not Shadeland Baptist Church? Our motto is that we are a friendly church with a Gospel message. It has been said by many, that we are the friendliest most inviting church in this location. Many of our visitors have come, and left with smiles on their faces because we are the type of people who will greet you with warmth and friendliness. Because of this, many have returned for more visits before joining.

Unity is a word that we like to describe our church. We are a united people willing to help one another and lift one another up in spirit and in prayer. When a church is united, a church is a strong group of people. God works with unity among brethren.

Many people fear walking into some church buildings because they are shameful of how they are dressed, shameful of how they smell, or even shameful of how their appearance renders themselves to the church people. We at Shadeland Baptist Church believe that the Lord will not turn any person away. So come and join us! We would be glad to have you!

Preaching and Teaching by the Word of God

Here at Shadeland we believe in preaching and teaching strictly by the Word of God and not from one's own perspective. Once an individual is saved, the Bible becomes their instructions for life, just as you buy a piece of equipment, one needs instructions to learn all that it can do. God speaks to us through His Word, that we may learn, and get wisdom and knowledge to preach and to teach His Word to many. It is the Word of God, and the Word of God alone that affects and changes the lives of people.
